Given the evolving threat environment both in Canada and internationally, NRCan is focused on strengthening the physical security posture of its facilities. This includes improving access control, surveillance, and intrusion detection capabilities to ensure personnel safety and operational continuity. NRCan operates an electronic security and surveillance system consisting of access control, video management, and intrusion detection systems deployed across multiple locations nationwide. The system is maintained through a combination of in-house IT and security resources, as well as contracted security system support and integration services. The system transitioned from legacy analog infrastructure to an IP-based architecture between 2016 and 2020, with ongoing enhancements through 2023. The current security system is built on a hybrid cloud and on-premises architecture, designed to balance cost and performance with confidentiality, integrity, and availability requirements. The system includes approximately 500 card readers and 500 cameras across more than 25 sites and is monitored through the NRCan Security Operations Control Centre (SOCC) located at 580 Booth Street in Ottawa, Ontario.
